Banning is responsible for didactic portions of PA education, particularly evidence-based medicine (EBM) topics who started her career in primary care with a proud focus on the veteran population before transitioning to education and developing a passion for EBM/critical thinking topics. She has authored several publications in the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (JAAPA) and the Journal of Physician Assistant Education (JPAE) and is a peer-reviewer for both journals. She has presented at PAEA and AAPA.
Banning is the current section editor for Exploring Medicine Through the Arts in JPAE and the former editor of the "A Difficult Diagnosis" section of JAAPA. She is a strong proponent of the benefits of the medical librarian-clinician team. In 2016, she was recognized in Billy Penn’s, “Who’s Next in Health” as one of 13 young Philly leaders shaping the health scene.
Banning is pursuing a Doctorate in Health Science from Drexel University and obtained her master’s of medical science/PA certificate from Arcadia University. She is interested in the strategies of Information Mastery, utilizing and applying evidence-based medicine effectively, improving empathetic patient-provider communication and the overlap between art and science.
Recently, Banning, with three PA faculty from different institutions have started the first ever podcast specifically geared towards PA educators called Airwaves and Educators. It was made with the intention to create community, share insight and strategies and to talk about all things medical, and specifically, PA education. You can find Airwaves and Educators at medium.com, and on Twitter and Instagram.
Additionally, Banning cohosts two other podcasts in the PA world. One for the Journal of the American Academy of PA (JAAPA) where she and her cohost summarize monthly JAAPA journal articles. Her third podcast is for a primary care educational product put out by HIPPO medical education where she and her cohost introduce PA topics before a monthly primary care-based medical update podcast. All are on Twitter and other social media too. It’s all a way for PAs to connect and form community virtually wherever they are.
